Rosalee has experienced life in a way few have - born in 1928, she was witness to a World War, in fact, her husband of 45 years was a decorated World War II Veteran who received a purple heart - given only to those wounded in combat. They eventually had two sons and two daughters, but struggled through a heart-breaking loss when one of their daughters lived for only 48 hours due to a rare blood disorder. But "giving up" isn't in Rosalee's vocabulary - she had three other children to raise, and she made sure that they never lacked for love and the beautiful lessons of life. Rosalee wasn't your typical stay-at-home mom of the era - she was a successful caterer for many years, wowing her customers with her wonderful recipes! She and her husband saved for many years to fulfill one of their dreams - opening their own restaurant. They made a deal with a local nightclub owner to open one inside the nightclub, and took his assurances that they were covered by his insurance since the restaurant was inside his building. (This was back in the day when a man's word was considered his bond!) You guessed it - tragedy struck - shortly after opening, the nightclub burned to the ground - and the nightclub had no insurance to cover their losses.
Down and out they might have been, but they never surrendered to fate. Picking up the pieces, they moved on with their lives, taking strength and comfort in each other as the years passed. Then - more misfortune - they were both attacked by a violent predator and beaten nearly to death. After a long recuperation, they both recovered, although it was a long and painful process. Rosalee also endured numerous surgeries, including 19 operations on her back and neck (she once broke her neck in a restaurant bathroom!) She would eventually lose nearly all of her sight (she now has tunnel vision) in one eye, and is totally blind in the other, but she retains a zest for life that is irresistible. Her husband, her partner, her very life and soul died in 1996, and you can hear the heartbreak and loss in every line of her poetry as she struggles to deal with the empty place in her life created by his absence. But her children surround her with love and sunlight, warming the chill of advancing years, and her grandchildren have brought joy and a dancing delight back into her life. From life to love, to death, to sorrow and back to life and love - the cycle is complete. Heritage of Love is a collection of the memories gathered by one amazing woman on one amazing journey through life.
